Dramatic Powder Room Design with Grey White and Red Bird WallpaperHave you ever wanted to perk up a tired room without having to start all over? The answer might be as simple as adding some new touches of an interior design staple: pattern!

Recently I was asked to update a well-worn powder room with taupe walls and neutral fixtures. My client felt that all the elements in the room were blending into each other and there was no focal point. I agreed – the room was quite boring! Recognizing that the powder room, though small and private, was an important indicator of my client’s overall style, I decided this room needed a professional makeover.

After replacing an outdated vanity with a beautiful wood cabinet, I sought an artistic solution for the tall walls which were the next best feature of the room. In addition to maximizing their grand effect, my client asked me to also address the issues of sound and privacy, since the powder room was located in the most public area of the home. Now I was on the search for a design solution that would not only add beauty, but provide sound absorption qualities and eye-catching details.

Upholstering the walls with a beautiful patterned wallpaper turned out to be the perfect answer!  The tall walls were enhanced by the repetition of a large pattern. The mesmerizing repetition of a birds-and-cherries motif created plenty of visual detail to distract the user from worries of privacy. Finally, to enhance the feeling of self-enclosure, I matched the ceiling paint to the deep red accent color of the tiny berries, visually reducing the height of the walls and the spatial range of the room. The makeover was complete.

Today we have such a great variety of wonderful patterns available to us, that it’s fun and easy to improve any room’s personality in a matter of hours! By changing even a few small items, you can create the big impact of a memorable room.
