3 Easy Guidelines to Minimize Confusion & Maximize Success:

Mixing a variety of fabrics in a room can make it exciting and fresh, or confusing and restless. The secret to success is the expert balancing of colors and patterns.

Lovely golds and blue-greens create a rich pattern of birds and foliage in the anchor fabric at the windows of this sun room. The fabric is repeated in sofa pillows that alternate with additional ones of solid blue-green silk. The neutral rug adds subtle sheen and texture to the room with its tone-on-tone design and low surface profile.

1.  Start with the most complex pattern you want to use. It may be fabric for pillows or draperies, or the design of the rug on the floor. The style may be free-flowing, such as vines and flowers, or rigid and precise, such as a geometric. It should combine all the colors you intend to use as accents in the room. This is your “anchor fabric”. The anchor fabric is the one that is most prominent.

2.  Next, choose a fabric of the opposite style, in a different scale, that has one or more of the same colors as the anchor fabric. For example, if your “anchor fabric” is a large floral, the second fabric may be a small stripe or criss-cross lattice pattern.

3.  Repeat this process, varying scale and pattern, until you have selected an interesting mix of fabrics with related colors.
